Even after sampling umpteen appetizers and main dishes, our judges still had room for this delicious dessert. The kids were totally nuts about the icing.

chopped nuts (optional) |

chopped apples |
Icing |
| ½cup |
(125 mL)
unsalted butter |
| 1cup |
(250 mL)
brown sugar |
| ½cup |
(50 mL)
milk |
| 2cups |
(500 mL)
icing sugar |
directions
| 1. | First make the brownies. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix well. Measure in the flour, baking powder, salt and nuts and apples, and stir until ingredients are thoroughly combined. |
| 2. | Spread batter in a greased 9 by 13-in. (22 by 33 cm) baking pan and bake at 350°F (180°C) for 30 to 35 minutes. Let cool completely before icing. |
| 3. | To make the icing, melt the butter in a saucepan, then add the brown sugar and milk and bring the mixture to a boil. Remove from heat, let cool and stir in the icing sugar. Spread onto cooled brownies. |
